About This Track
The fourth track on AJR's second album 'The Click' features Rivers Cuomo and centres on the emotional numbness that can accompany growing up. Jack Met anchors the song with a refrain that frames adulthood as a kind of anaesthetic, the plea for help to 'sober up' doubled as a wish to feel something again. The lyric toggles between childhood nostalgia, recess in second grade, best friends who promised to keep in touch, and the present-tense realisation that party-time smiles rarely extend beyond the party itself. Cuomo's bridge supplies the counterweight, a repeated declaration that 'my favorite color is you' and a promise that the addressee keeps him young. The production is upbeat, the tempo brisk, the arrangement designed to carry a difficult subject without collapsing under its weight. An EP of remixes, including one by Steve Aoki, followed in 2018.
