About This Track

'Pusher' finds alt-J wrestling with emotional dependency and the weight of solitude. The song circles a simple question: are you someone who drives forward, or someone who needs to be driven? The lyrics move between abstract imagery (dispersive prisms, a flock of red-billed quelea) and intimate confession, collapsing the distance between ornithological observation and the ache of waiting for a phone that never rings. There is a brittleness to the admission of needing another person to feel alive. The track builds its argument through repetition and accumulation. Hope and doubt layer upon each other until they crush bones to oil; a quelea crawls on its last wings; optimism persists even as loneliness threatens to flatten it entirely. Alt-J's arrangement mirrors this tension, moving between sparse, almost conversational passages and moments of greater density. The song ends where it began, circling back to the opening plea, suggesting that some questions do not resolve so much as recur.
