About This Track

'Covet' captures the push and pull of a relationship that feels both necessary and suffocating. Basement circle the central paradox in plain language: the desire to be close to someone paired with an equal urge to escape. The repetition of "when I'm with you, I don't want to be with you" becomes a kind of mantra, the song's emotional architecture built on that single contradiction, turning it over until it reveals something true about longing and ambivalence. The lyrics move between observation and confession. Details accumulate, white hair, a hopeful smile, a good heart, but they fail to resolve the tension at the song's core. There's no redemption in proximity, no comfort in companionship. Instead, Basement sit with the discomfort, letting the song's emo framework hold space for feelings that resist easy answers. The result is a track that feels both intimate and claustrophobic, a portrait of love as something closer to a trap.

"Covet" is a track by Basement, from the album colourmeinkindness, released 22nd October 2012. The track is 3:47 long. It's filed under Indie Rock. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about Basement.

Lyrics

Covet

When I'm with you
I don't want to be with you

White hair
And a hopeful smile
Your inside
Is on your outside
I need
A pleasant surprise

Good heart and desire to please
I want a fatal disease

With you
I don't want to be with you
When I'm with you
I don't want to be with you

You are
Everything
My most
Demanding dream

Good heart and desire to please
I want a fatal diseases
With you
I don't want to be with you
When I'm with you
I don't want to be with you
When I'm with you
I don't want to be with you
When I'm with you
I don't want to be with you

This month's issue is full of self-belief, slow-burn growth, hard-earned honesty and the sort of records that arrive when artists trust their own instincts.
