About This Track

A duet with Frank Ocean built around the idea of resilience in partnership, 'Superpower' frames intimacy as a kind of political force. Beyoncé sings of the difference between solitude and connection, the way touch and voice shift meaning when shared. The refrain lists images of strength ('like a shark', 'like a bear') whilst insisting on 'tough love', a phrase that recurs through the verses as both acknowledgment of difficulty and assertion of endurance. The production, handled by Pharrell Williams, strips back to make space for the vocal interplay. The song was written by Beyoncé, Ocean, Boots and Williams, and its video eschews lip-syncing in favour of slow-motion tableaux.
