About This Track
A meditation on entitlement and evasion, 'We' finds Bon Iver circling the gap between what people want and what they're willing to acknowledge about themselves. The song moves between accusation and complicity, addressing someone caught in the habit of taking without reckoning, turning away from consequence. There's a sharpness to the language: "you're adjacent to the scar", "you putting me flat on the floor". The repeated plea "I want it back" becomes both personal and political, a question about what gets lost when self-interest hardens into refusal. The track builds its argument through ordinary detail. Towers, oars, tariffs, gold that doesn't fold. These are the small economies of avoidance, the ways people defend what they've claimed whilst others go without. Bon Iver's voice carries a kind of weary clarity, naming the pattern without quite condemning it. By the end, the arithmetic of taking has become visible: "just keep adding up boy, you'll be below regard". The song doesn't offer redemption, only the cold arithmetic of consequence.
