About This Track
Chic's 'Le Freak' is a funk-disco invitation to the dancefloor, built on a simple proposition: pressure and routine can be cured by rhythm and movement. The song moves between the vernacular and the French, its title a playful collision of languages that doubles as a statement of intent. Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers wrote and produced the track with economy; the hook repeats itself without apology, and the verses sketch out a world of nightclubs and collective release with the clarity of a postcard. The song references the Savoy and Studio 54, real venues that anchored New York's dance culture, and frames the freak as something available to everyone, young and old alike. It's an egalitarian vision dressed up in a three-minute single, one that trades in aspiration without pretension. The track became a commercial landmark, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating the disco charts in the summer of 1978.
"Le Freak" is a track by Chic, from the album C’est Chic, released 10th July 1978. Full lyrics are available below.
