About This Track

'Control' by Citizen is a 2017 alternative track from the album 'As You Please'. The lyrics move through a claustrophobic, image-heavy scene, with thinning air and a narrow hallway giving way to a sense of impersonality, nameless faces, and a wish to be real close to something guarded. There is also a stubborn, almost defensive note of performance, as if the speaker is trying to help people get through “nothing”, while remaining trapped in their own short daydream. The circle’s resonance lands like a taunt, and the final line gathers the imagery of hands held under thorns.

"Control" is a track by Citizen, from the album As You Please, released 5th October 2017. The track is 3:57 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 4 articles about Citizen.

Lyrics

Control

Thinning airflow through a narrow hallway
Hanging heads from the billboards, hoping to entertain
I hear the circle resonate
You're all nameless faces to me
I'm merely a short daydream
I helped you get through nothing

And if you look real close
Hands held under the thorns
Keep you proud of the unknown
I'm your toy when things get shallow
I'm under your control

Press your face to wood floor, you're the grain
Here's a savior for when you don't feel anything
I am what you want me to be
Ripped right out in front of me
Was on the edge of your everything
Now something gets in the way
Innocence sedates your memory
The misbelief in anything
I see you on every city street
Looking for me to fix your pain

And if you look real close
Hands held under the thorns
Keep you proud of the unknown
I'm your toy when things get shallow
It swallows everyone
You don't hold enough to show
Anything for what you've done
I'm your toy when things get shallow
I'm under your control

(I've wished for this)
Well, my attention comes and goes ever since
And I (I've dreamt of this)
Well, it is never clean behind the film we're staring at

And if you look real close
Hands held under the thorns
Keep you proud of the unknown
I'm your toy when things get shallow
It swallows everyone
You don't hold enough to show
Anything for what you've done
I'm your toy when things get shallow
I'm under your control
I'm under your control
