The third single from Coldplay's second album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', 'Clocks' arrived in March 2003 with two B-sides, 'Crests of Waves' and 'Animals'. The track runs just over five minutes, built around a repeating piano motif that drives the song's momentum.
Chris Martin's lyrics circle questions of agency and belonging. He adopts the voice of someone caught between opposing forces, tides, closing walls, ticking clocks, asking whether he is part of the cure or part of the disease. The refrain 'You are' repeats without elaboration, a placeholder for certainty in a song otherwise defined by doubt. The closing lines turn towards home, the word repeated until it becomes both destination and mantra, the place he wanted to go.
