About This Track
Chris Martin and JAY-Z circle the same question from different angles: what does it cost to succeed, and whether the price is worth paying. Martin's verses sketch a philosophy of resilience, arguing that loss and hurt do not define trajectory. JAY-Z responds with a darker catalogue, naming figures from Michael Jackson to Biggie Smalls to Jesus, each a case study in the machinery that builds up and tears down. The interpolation lifts cleanly but the execution feels measured, as if both voices are still finding their footing in shared space. The remix's central metaphor hardens as it goes. Martin sings of rivers crossed and doors locked; JAY-Z extends the image into something sharper and more violent, where success itself becomes the weapon. "Success is like suicide," he raps, and the phrase lands not as hyperbole but as a structural observation about fame and its aftermath. The song does not resolve the tension between them. It simply holds it, waiting for the shine to wear off.
