About This Track
Released as the lead single from 'Ghost Stories' in March 2014, 'Magic' introduces Coldplay's sixth studio album through the lens of a relationship framed in the language of illusion and sleight of hand. The track uses stage-magic metaphors to describe a bond that persists even after fracture, Chris Martin singing 'And I just got broken / Broken into two / Still I call it magic / When I'm next to you'. The repetition of 'I don't want anybody else but you' anchors the song's central fixation, whilst the imagery of disappearance and transformation runs throughout.
The production is restrained, allowing the lyrical conceit to carry the emotional weight. Where earlier Coldplay singles built towards expansive choruses, 'Magic' holds a quieter line, the arrangement serving the intimacy of the subject rather than stadium scale. The song charted across multiple territories following its release, establishing the more subdued tone that would define the album as a whole.
"Magic" is a single by Coldplay, from the album Ghost Stories, released 18th May 2014. The track is 4:45 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 11 articles about Coldplay.
