About This Track

Built around a piano ballad, 'The Scientist' appears as the fourth track on Coldplay's second album, 'A Rush of Blood to the Head', released in 2002. The song is credited to all four band members and tells the story of a man's desire to love and an apology.

Chris Martin's lyrics trace a plea for reconciliation, the narrator guessing at numbers and figures whilst pulling puzzles apart. The refrain acknowledges the difficulty plainly: nobody said it was easy, no one ever said it would be this hard. The song became one of the key singles from an album that spent over a year on the UK chart and ranks among the country's twenty biggest-selling records of the twenty-first century.
