'CHANGE' by Deftones is a 2023 track that stays locked on a horror-tinged, voyeuristic transformation, with the singer watching someone change into something insect-like, “on fire”, and then being handled and altered. The lyrics move like a grim set of observations, ending on the repetition of watching, as if the act of looking is both obsession and exoneration. A callous streak runs through the surreal images, including the stripping away of wings and the sudden laughter, before the song returns to the same hard gaze.
