Kill Them With Kindness - Commentary

There was a phrase we kept saying when making this record. It was "Instincts are powerful thing." And I'm telling you now, in this song, it was all about instincts. We just kept going with the moments, writing the bridge. In the moment I was recording the vocals. Having an instinct when you have hateful people that, that go at you. The instinct is to actually, my instinct is to kill them with kindness. I go, "Hang on a minute, don't go passing your hate over here." And this song has that energy of, it still got that guts to it in the drums. It's got a really strong theme where Matt in the moment went with his instincts and started playing the lead guitar theme that you hear in that last chorus. We wanted to sound like Cecilia and free falling and a little bit of fun, the band. And this is what we ended up getting. But besides that, this song had a really organic place where it was written from two different concerts that happened in my life. [Laughter]
