A slow-burn breakup ballad from Drake's second studio album 'Take Care', 'Doing It Wrong' strips away the bravado for a portrait of mutual recognition. The production, handled by Noah "40" Shebib, stays minimal and low-tempo, creating space for the central admission: both parties know the relationship has run its course, but fear of seeing each other move on keeps them locked in place. Drake frames the impasse plainly, acknowledging the performative comfort of staying together whilst something essential remains missing.
The lyric builds around a repeated structure of conditional gestures, each met with the same refusal: "cry if you need to, but I can't stay to watch you". The chorus cycles through touch, talk, and the inevitable false declaration of love, Drake positioning himself as the one who must leave to avoid compounding the dishonesty. The outro features a harmonica solo from Stevie Wonder, a wordless coda that underscores the melancholy without overstating it.
The song's sharpest observation arrives early: "We live in a generation of not being in love and not being together / But we sure make it feel like we're together". It's a diagnosis of convenience mistaken for commitment, the kind of clear-eyed assessment that cuts through the album's broader themes of fame and distance to land somewhere more universally recognisable.
"Doing It Wrong" is a track by Drake, from the album Take Care, released 15th November 2011. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 4 articles about Drake.
