'Umbra' arrives as the penultimate track on Ghost's sixth album 'Skeletá', a five-and-a-half-minute finale that channels the album's embrace of 80s excess and theatrical grandeur. Tobias Forge has described it as the record's "final fight", a climactic moment before the closing credits roll. The song itself is unabashedly carnal, built around religious imagery and devotional language repurposed as intimate surrender: "In the chapel of the holy one / In the presence of the chosen son / I see your light shine through." The track exemplifies what makes 'Skeletá' work so well. Solos rip through with unrestrained energy, the metal-pop formula Ghost have perfected feels neither overwrought nor cynical, and the sheer confidence of the execution carries the day. A Dork four-star record, and 'Umbra' stands as proof that Ghost can sustain their particular brand of gilded theatricality across a full album without tipping into excess.
