The second single from Ghost's second studio album 'Infestissumam', 'Year Zero' is one of only two tracks on which Tobias Forge was not the main author. The song builds its theatrical menace around a litany of demonic names and apocalyptic imagery, Ghost framing the arrival of a new satanic era with choral grandeur and heavy-metal heft. The lyrics invoke Belial, Behemoth, Beelzebub, and others in ritualistic repetition, whilst the chorus proclaims the coming of Year Zero itself. Ghost adopt the posture of dark prophecy, describing humanity's fate in parasitic terms and heralding the ascent of the ancient serpent deceiver. The execution is earnest rather than camp, the band treating their occult pageantry as high ceremony. Released as a single in 2013, the track became a fixture in the Swedish group's live set, its combination of doom-laden riffs and processional arrangement a distillation of Ghost's blend of metal tradition and gothic theatre.
"Year Zero" is a single by Ghost, released 10th April 2013. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about Ghost.
