Punk

A minute-and-a-half burst of controlled chaos, 'Punk' strips the Gorillaz sound down to its essentials. Damon Albarn plays nearly every instrument, with David Rowntree on drums, and the result is lean and percussive, all sharp edges and minimal space. The vocal delivery matches the aesthetic: clipped, repetitive, almost chanted, with "shut up" becoming a kind of mantra or refrain that structures the whole piece. The lyrics circle obsessively around constraint and compliance, voices stacking and overlapping as if trapped in a loop of their own making. There's an undercurrent of frustration beneath the surface brevity, a sense of things being done to oneself rather than chosen. It's an experiment in what the band's voice might be, and the answer is something abrasive and deliberately unpolished, a deliberate rejection of smoothness in favour of raw, repetitive pressure.
