A late-night phone call spirals into something neither party can quite control. '3 AM' finds Haim in playful, funky territory, the track built around voicemails and record scratches, its 90s R&B groove complete with falsetto flourishes. The sisters are feeling themselves here, the production layered with an EDM-filtered guitar that gives the whole thing a slightly dizzy, nocturnal charge. Lyrically, it's a song about temptation and the pull of connection at an hour when better judgment sleeps, the repeated refrain of "picking up for the last time" carrying a knowing wink.
It sits among the album's most playful moments, a sharp turn from the stripped-back vulnerability elsewhere on 'Women In Music Pt. III'. Where much of the record strips away the glossy production of their earlier work, '3 AM' leans into texture and colour, proof that Haim's willingness to explore different genres head first extends to the funkier corners of their sound. A Dork three-star record.
