Halsey turns Mad Cool into a furious ceremony of rebirth
Halsey's 'The Girl in the Tower' festival run reaches Mad Cool with a theatrical, career-spanning set.
About This Track
Released in September 2019 as the second single from 'Manic', 'Graveyard' finds Halsey confronting the self-destructive pull of devotion. The production, handled by Jon Bellion, Ojivolta, Louis Bell, and The Monsters & Strangerz, opens with a contemplative guitar melody before building into a track that examines how warning signs in a relationship can feel deceptively like butterflies. Halsey sings of following someone down their darkest roads, the metaphor of the graveyard literalising the cost of that loyalty.
The lyrics trace a narrator who keeps running even when both feet hurt, unable to stop digging themselves deeper into a dynamic where the hand they want to hold has become a weapon. There's a drunk driver at the wheel, eyes so dark the narrator wonders how they even see, yet the compulsion to follow persists. The song addresses the corrosive power of love without flinching from the specifics: the locked door, the push right through, the recognition that what you love most can be your detriment.
The track reached the top forty in fifteen countries and is certified double platinum in the United States. Its time-lapse visualiser heightened the manic undertow through sped-up imagery, matching the song's portrait of a relationship accelerating past every rational exit.
