About This Track
A post-mortem on devotion that curdles into resentment, 'Without Me' finds Halsey cataloguing the emotional labour of propping up a partner who has since walked away. The lyric moves from rescue to betrayal, each verse itemising the support given and the ingratitude received in return. Halsey wrote the track with Brittany Amaradio, Amy Allen, and Louis Bell, the latter handling production alongside Dylan Bauld, and the arrangement interpolates Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me a River', that earlier study in public heartbreak, with Timberlake, Timbaland and Scott Storch credited as co-writers.
Released in October 2018 through Capitol Records, the song arrived initially as a standalone single before being folded into 'Manic' as its lead track and ninth position on the album. The interpolation lifts cleanly but the execution feels measured, Halsey's delivery poised somewhere between wounded and withering. The chorus hinges on a single question, repeated until it sounds less like an appeal than an accusation, the kind of clarity that arrives too late to change the outcome but early enough to sting.
"Without Me" is a single by Halsey, from the album Manic, released 17th January 2020. The track is 3:22 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about Halsey.
