About This Track

A track of restless momentum, 'Hands Away' arrives midway through Interpol's debut with the force of a sudden jolt. The song builds from taut, propulsive guitar work into something that feels both urgent and controlled, its energy carefully calibrated rather than wild. Lyrically, the band trades in fragments of desire and confusion, the repeated question "what happened?" suggesting a relationship unravelling in real time, though the exact narrative remains deliberately obscure. What makes the track work is its refusal to overstate itself. The band holds the tension steady, letting the instrumental drive do much of the emotional work whilst the vocals stay measured and precise. It sits naturally between the excitable rush of 'PDA' and the downbeat beauty of the track that follows, a perfectly placed pivot point that demonstrates the album's structural intelligence.

"Hands Away" is a single by Interpol, from the album Turn On the Bright Lights, released 3rd June 2002. The track is 3:06 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 15 articles about Interpol.

Lyrics

Hands Away

Will you put my hands away?
Will you be my man?
Serve it up, don't wait
Let's see about this ham

Oh, what happened?

Oh, what happened?
Home spun desperation's knowing
Inside your cover's always blown
