About This Track

'PDA' opens with a taut post-punk guitar line and builds into something more propulsive, the rhythm section locking tight beneath Paul Banks's detached vocal. The lyrics sketch a relationship in freefall, all mutual recrimination and failed connection. Banks repeats the refrain about two hundred couches with deadpan precision, a line that lodges itself in the ear precisely because of its oddness, its specificity without explanation. The song moves through phases of restraint and release. Verses strip back to essentials; the chorus swells with drums and bass before collapsing again into guitar and voice. There's a coldness to the arrangement that matches the emotional distance the lyrics describe, a sense of two people unable to reach each other even when they're in the same room. The production is clean and measured, every element audible, nothing wasted.
