About This Track

'Speed' arrives as a moment of tonal shift on Por Vida, the darkness descending after the ride into the sunset that precedes it. Kali Uchis builds the track around a central metaphor of velocity and restraint, the narrator caught between the exhilaration of being driven forward and the fear of what happens if the momentum becomes uncontrollable. The production, handled by Tyler, the Creator, sits lean and propulsive, letting her voice carry the tension between desire and caution. The song circles its central plea with precision. She wants speed, wants to move faster, wants to skip past the careful reading of subtext and get to something real. But there's a warning threaded through it: "you better hit your brakes 'fore you crash". It's a song about the collision between wanting to accelerate a relationship and knowing that recklessness ends in wreckage, about impatience meeting the hard logic of consequence.
