About This Track

'YAH.' is the third track on Kendrick Lamar's fourth studio album 'DAMN.', released on 14th April 2017. Written by Lamar alongside Sounwave, DJ Dahi, and Anthony Tiffith, the song takes its title from Yahweh, believed to be the closest estimation to God's actual name in Hebrew.

The track finds Lamar navigating the tension between spiritual conviction and material temptation. He declares himself an Israelite and rejects racial labels as mere colour, citing Deuteronomy and the counsel of his cousin Carl Duckworth, whilst the refrain acknowledges the pull of money and desire. The production is spare and meditative, leaving room for Lamar's voice to move between introspection and defiance.

Lyrically, Lamar addresses the machinery of fame with a mixture of wariness and resolve, noting Fox News' use of his name for ratings and the fact that his niece recognises him on television. The song's structure circles back to its hypnotic hook, the word 'yah' functioning as both affirmation and mantra, a point of stillness in the chaos Lamar describes.
