About This Track
The sixth track on 'Swimming', 'Wings' opens with an instrumental that conveys helplessness, almost as if suspended in a dark void. Mac Miller picks through motives and gossip with a bone-to-pick posture, then shifts to riding through the breeze with wind in his face, refusing to stop when it feels so great. The lyric moves from confrontation to a kind of forward momentum, the walls getting wider whilst he hopes never to find them.
The second verse finds him moving so fast the clock looks slow, watering seeds until the flower grows, playing it by ear with silence all he hears. He asks who can surf the universe with him, notes that trust has been a problem, and declares that all he ever wants is what he needs. The chorus repeats the simple assertion of autonomy and self-possession, a declaration of independence framed as flight.
