About This Track

The opening track from 'Black Holes and Revelations', 'Starlight' finds Matt Bellamy addressing a lover through the metaphor of interstellar distance. The ship imagery frames separation and longing, whilst the chorus builds around a promise of pursuit and devotion. Bellamy credits the partner with electrifying his life, the lyric proposing a pact to reignite those around them who've grown numb to feeling. The song reached number two on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, Muse's most popular single in the US at that point. Its relative accessibility helped the parent album debut at number nine on the Billboard 200, the band's first top-ten entry there. The title phrase recurs throughout, anchoring a lyric that toggles between cosmic escape and the simple wish to hold someone close, the album's central tension between hope and entropy already audible in miniature.
