Normani enlists 6lack on 'Waves', a portrait of emotional turbulence in the aftermath of a relationship. The song finds her caught in a cycle of contradictory feeling: blaming, then wanting; hating, then loving. There's no stable ground here, only the perpetual motion of desire and regret, each emotion arriving with the force and inevitability of tide. The production mirrors that restlessness. Normani's vocal moves between confession and resignation, whilst the track builds around the central metaphor of waves, repetitive and inescapable. She acknowledges the pattern without quite breaking it: "I can't help myself, no" becomes both admission and surrender. 6lack's presence in the second half adds another voice to the spiral, another perspective on the same drowning.
"Waves" is a single by Normani, released 15th November 2018. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 5 articles about Normani.
