Offset trades in menace and material excess across 'Nightmare', a track built on the production of Metro Boomin. The song channels the logic of a threat: the repeated invocation of Freddy Krueger establishes a conceit of inescapable danger, a presence that arrives when you lower your guard. Offset leans into the persona with specificity, detailing the apparatus of intimidation, black gloves, black hoodie, Timbs, the promise of violence rendered casual and inevitable. The track moves between boasts and warnings with little distinction between them. Cash accumulation, luxury goods, sexual conquest and the threat of armed robbery occupy the same rhetorical space. Metro Boomin's production, which carries over from the preceding track on the album, provides a bloodstained continuity; Offset follows in the footsteps established by his collaborator 21 Savage on this project. The result is a record that treats menace as a form of currency, indistinguishable from the material wealth it promises to secure.
"Nightmare" is a track by Offset, from the album Without Warning, released 31st October 2017. Full lyrics are available below.
