About This Track

'Telefono' opens with the anxious crackle of a long-distance call, its protagonist caught between two continents. The song unfolds as a series of confessions made down the line to someone absent, someone whose career has pulled them away longer than expected. Phoenix build the track around that central tension: the ache of distance, the small domestic gestures that accumulate in waiting (the motorboat bought for summer, the sheets chosen on a Roman holiday), and the gnawing question of whether any of it will matter if the other person doesn't return.
