About This Track

A strutting piece of funk-inflected pop that finds Queen in their early-1980s groove. 'Cool Cat' is built on a steady, synth-driven pulse and Freddie Mercury's characteristically assured vocal, which moves between spoken-word swagger and melodic assertion. The song sketches a portrait of someone coasting on charm and surface confidence, someone who knows how to work a room but may be running on empty underneath. The track moves with real swing, Mercury and John Deacon constructing verses that feel lived-in and conversational. There's a lightness to the production that lets the rhythm breathe, and the chorus lands with a hook that sticks without needing to shout. The bridge pulls back to interrogate its subject, questioning whether the bravado has actually amounted to anything, before the song settles back into its groove, content to let the beat do the talking.
