About This Track

'Control' by Ratboys is a 2017 rock track from the album 'GN'. The lyrics picture a sudden, accidental near-miss, then a compulsive push to look past it, as machines and bent metal take over the imagination. In place of calm reflection, the voice keeps turning away and back again, describing running across manhole covers and heading “Toward the center of my Earth”, with visions of big machines transforming into something more consuming, like an atmosphere of control tightening around the scene.

"Control" is a track by Ratboys, from the album GN, released 29th June 2017. The track is 4:44 long. It's filed under Rock. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 3 articles about Ratboys.

Lyrics

Control

I almost saw a train wreck
Then I had to look away
Never had I wondered before
What happened when metal bent and tore

I ran across manhole covers
Toward the center of my Earth
Valleys and other landmarks
Visions of big machines transformed

Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-oh-oh-oh

Walking around in St. Matthews
The winds were light and the roads were wet
Those green sloping mountains over
Leading up to gravel beds

My brother Paul was walking aimless
My father Pete had turned away
Paul stumbled toward a roaring train track
He was only four years old that day

Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-oh-oh-oh

Who's in control?
Who's in control?
Whoa-oh-oh, ooh-whoa, ooh-whoa-oh-oh
Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh

I barely saw it happen
The ground's monumental shake
There must have been two feet between them
Before those two hands snatched him safe
As we headed home to beat the sunset
I heard him crying overhead
That night I dreamt we turned the lights out
And wandered far away from this

Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-oh-oh-oh

Who's in control?
Yeah, who's in control?
Whoa-oh-oh, ooh-whoa, ooh-whoa-oh-oh
Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Now I'm sitting on a bridge
Out in Portland, Oregon
The old day begins to shudder
And rolling on becomes another

Oh-ooh-oh, oh-ooh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-whoa, oh-whoa, oh-oh-oh-oh
