Released on SoundCloud in August 2021 and then to streaming platforms that December, 'I Hate U' arrived as a preview of the emotional sprawl SZA would later collect on 'SOS'. The track became the album's second single, a slow-burning electro-R&B piece built on minimal, crunching production that leaves her voice exposed. Where some artists might smooth over the contradictions of wanting and resenting someone in the same breath, SZA leans into the mess, cataloguing the ways a relationship can scramble you whilst you're still caught in its orbit.
The lyrics toggle between desire and disgust, SZA admitting she's 'heavy on the missing you' even as she declares her hatred plainly. She writes herself as someone who used to be solid, nonviolent, a rider, now reduced to silent treatment and circular arguments.
