About This Track
A study in emotional numbness and rejection, 'Cold' builds its landscape from images of physical distance and frozen affect. The narrator moves through scenes of abandonment, his back turned, his words mouthed without warmth, crawling across a mirror as though searching for some reflection of himself. The song's central conceit, that a lover's name enters the heart like ice, transforms intimacy into a kind of wound. The track sustains this chill through repetition and restraint. Everything is rendered cold: life itself, silence, even the eyes that refuse to move. There is no climax, no release. Instead, the refrain circles back, the same phrase returning like a thought that cannot be shaken, until the song ends where it began, trapped in its own frozen logic.
"Cold" is a track by The Cure, released 3rd May 1982. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about The Cure.
