About This Track

'4°' arrives as a moment of persuasion and surrender. The track builds around a simple, insistent command: get up, free yourself from yourself. What follows is an invitation to excavation, to dig into the locked chambers within and bring out what's been hidden. Tool frames this as liberation, though the language grows stranger and more demanding as the song deepens. The chorus pivots on a troubling paradox. You won't do what you'd like to do; you won't feel what you'd like to feel. Instead, the narrator offers to kill what you want and consume what remains. The song dwells in this space of surrender and consumption, each repetition of "take it all" becoming less an offer and more an insistence. By the bridge, the temperature rises. Four degrees warmer now. Give in. Let me in. The intimacy turns claustrophobic, the closeness promised as something that brings you nearer than dying, than cancer, than crying. It's a song about the seduction of letting go, about the relief and terror of being completely taken in.

"4°" is a track by Tool, from the album Undertow, released 6th April 1993. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 2 articles about Tool.

Lyrics

4°

[Intro]

Get up, get up now

Get up, get up now

Get up, get up now

Get up, get up now

And free yourself from yourself

Free yourself from yourself

[Verse 1]

Locked up inside you

Like the calm beneath castles

Is a cavern of treasures that

No one has been to

Let's go digging

Let's go digging

Bring it out and then take it back in

[Chorus]

You won't do what you'd like to do

Lay back and let me show you another way

I'll kill what you want me to

Take what's left and eat it

Take all or nothing

Just too short to push it away

Take it all

Take it all in

[Post-Chorus]

All the way in

All the way in

Let it go

Let it go in

[Chorus]

You won't feel what you'd like to feel

Lay back and let me show you another way

I'll kill what you want me to

Take what's left and eat it

Take all or nothing

Just too short to lap it up

[Verse 3]

If you knock me down

I'll just come back running

Knock you down

It won't be long now

All the way in

All the way in

All the way in

All the way in

[Chorus]

Kill what you want me to

Take what's left and eat it

Take all or nothing

Just too short to push it away

[Bridge]

Take it up

Take it up higher

Four degrees now

Four degrees warmer

Give in now

Give in now

And let me in

You'll like this

This brings us out

You'll like this

It brings us closer than dying and

Cancer and crying, this

Take it, take it

You can take it all

Take it, take it

Come on, you can take it all

Take it all in

Take it, you can take it all in

Take it, you can take it, you can take it

Take it, you can take it, you can take it

Take it, you can take it

Take it, take it

Take it, take it, take it

[Chorus]

Kill what you want me to

Take what's left and eat it

Take all or nothing

Just too short to reach it

[Outro]

Just like that

Just like that

Just like
