About This Track

Tool's 'Reflection' arrives as the closing statement of a cyclical journey. The track fades in gradually, building through waves of intensity that crest and recede, only to rise again. Its architecture mirrors the emotional arc of the album itself, a slow accumulation of weight and release that leaves the listener suspended in contemplation. The song confronts ego and narcissism head-on, moving from a place of despair toward acceptance. The narrator begins in darkness, self-aware enough to recognise his own pitiful state, before invoking an external light as salvation. Tool frames this not as weakness but as necessary surrender: the ego must be crucified before it consumes entirely. The final verses expand outward, suggesting that this personal reckoning is universal, that all consciousness shares the same capacity for both delusion and redemption. The repeated refrain about pining away becomes both warning and prayer, a plea to transcend the self before it withers entirely.
