About This Track
'One' is the third track from U2's seventh album, 'Achtung Baby', released as a single on 24 February 1992. The song emerged during fraught recording sessions at Hansa Studios in Berlin, where conflict between the band members threatened to derail the project. According to the Edge, the melody arrived whilst the group jammed on a progression that would later become 'Mysterious Ways'; he recalls something very powerful suddenly happening in the room.
The lyric adopts a voice caught between intimacy and fracture. Bono questions whether things are getting better, whether forgiveness is possible, whether love can survive when 'we're one but we're not the same'. The refrain insists on unity, 'one love, one blood', but the verses catalogue disappointment and hurt done and repeated. The Edge has described it as the first in a new, more intimate style for the band.
Bono has noted the song's twisted quality, expressing bemusement that so many couples choose it for weddings when it is, in his view, about splitting up. 'One' has become one of U2's most recognised songs.
