Pukkelpop

PUKKELPOP

Pukkelpop is one of Belgium's biggest festivals, held in mid-to-late August in the fields and woodland at Kiewit, a few kilometres north of Hasselt. Its name is the Dutch word for pimple, a clue to the irreverence of an event founded in 1985 by a humanist youth organisation from Leopoldsburg; the first edition drew 3,000 people to a village football ground, with Anne Clark headlining. It settled at Kiewit in 1991 and has since sprawled across multiple stages, programming with a deliberately wide and contemporary alternative remit, from rock and punk to electronic, hip hop and metal. Over four decades it has hosted an enormous roll-call, including Nirvana (a month before Nevermind), Ramones, Radiohead, Daft Punk, Bjork and Arctic Monkeys. Its history also carries tragedy: a violent storm on the opening day in 2011 collapsed tents and killed five people, leading organisers to cancel that edition. The 2020 and 2021 festivals were cancelled because of COVID-19, after which it returned.
