Sparks is an American pop and rock duo formed in 1968 in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, by brothers Ron and Russell Mael. Originally known as Halfnelson, the group is recognized for their unconventional songwriting, which often features sophisticated and acerbic lyrics with literary or cinematic references. Their performances are characterized by an idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence, with Russell Mael displaying animated, hyperactive antics and Ron Mael maintaining a deadpan, often scowling demeanor. Russell Mael's vocal style is distinctive and wide-ranging, while Ron Mael plays keyboards with an intricate and rhythmic approach. The duo's diverse stylistic shifts and visual presentations have contributed to their enduring presence in modern, artful pop music. Notable career highlights include the 1974 glam rock single 'This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us,' which reached number two on the UK singles chart; the 1979 disco hits 'The Number One Song in Heaven' and 'Beat the Clock,' created in collaboration with Giorgio Moroder and marking a transition toward new wave and synth-pop; the 1980 single 'When I'm with You,' which charted in Australia and France; and the single 'I Predict,' their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 63.
