Jack Kaye has shared his debut solo single ‘Dora’, marking his first new music since The Magic Gang split in 2020.
Released via Fascination Street Records, the track arrives after a six-year stretch that saw Kaye step away from releasing music publicly while navigating writer’s block, collaboration, family life and a gradual return to songwriting.
“I had writer’s block for a long time after the band broke up,” Kaye says. “Wheels were spinning; I was trying to figure out what I was even doing musically.
“So I decided to take myself out of my own head. I started to write this song, loosely based on a friend’s relationship. Once I got into that storytelling mindset, it became fun again and everything flowed.”
“We shot the video at a boxing gym I used to go to when I was a kid,” he adds. “My friend Josh, who I’ve known since we were 11, directed it. We bought a bubble machine, got our mate’s Dad to play the trainer and had at it.
“It was the most fun I’ve had in ages and a relief after taking things so seriously for so long.”
Before going solo, Kaye fronted Brighton indie band The Magic Gang, who released two UK Top 20 albums and played sold-out headline shows including London’s Roundhouse before calling it a day.
Jack Kaye will headline London’s George Tavern on 9th September.
The Irish folk track premieres as BBC Radio 1's Hottest Record.
