Sheffield’s Leadmill music venue has lost its eviction appeal and must vacate within three months

The historic Sheffield music venue must leave its original location by August, ending 45 years of hosting major artists and events.

The Leadmill have lost their legal appeal against eviction by their landlord from their iconic Sheffield venue, with orders to vacate the premises within three months.

The independent venue, which has operated since 1980, will be forced to leave their current location following the court’s decision, resulting in the loss of over 70 jobs.

The venue say in a statement: “We’ve fought tirelessly to protect this independent venue which has supported countless artists, musicians and creatives for over four decades. Today’s decision feels like a betrayal of the cultural fabric of our city.

“We’re truly devastated by this outcome, but we also know hand on heart that we did everything possible to stop the Leadmill being evicted. We have poured our energy, time, love and determination into this fight and we’re immensely proud of our team and the community that stood by us. We walk forward with our heads held high, knowing we gave it our all. That strength and passion will carry us into the next chapter, whatever form it may take.”

The Leadmill have hosted performances from numerous significant artists throughout their history, including Def Leppard, Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, and Oasis. Beyond music, the space has served as a hub for theatre, comedy, art, and community activism.

The venue plan to host a series of farewell events in their current location, with details to be announced. They have confirmed that all previously scheduled events will continue, with arrangements being made to relocate shows to alternative venues across Sheffield. All existing tickets remain valid.

The Leadmill have stated they intend to continue operating elsewhere in Sheffield, with plans to maintain their cultural presence in the city. Ticket holders will receive direct communication regarding any changes to scheduled events.
