Lonnie Gunn has shared a new track 'Good Girls Go to Heaven'
Produced by Caleb Wright, the single explores grief and forced estrangement.
Brighton-based, New Jersey-raised artist Lonnie Gunn has put out 'Good Girls Go to Heaven', a self-released single produced by Caleb Wright, who has previously worked with Samia and Hippo Campus. The track was recorded last summer with Eden Joel.
Speaking about the song, Gunn said: "Good Girls Go to Heaven reflects the eerie, painful realities of forcing yourself to be a stranger to someone you once knew intimately and being unable to let go. The song swallows all that frustration, yearning, and emotional repression and vomits it back out into a white-hot fuzz. The title itself is sort of an ironic remark about behaving in accordance with the 'social guidelines' instead of addressing the elephant in the room: the fact that this other person and I were once in love and can never unknow that feeling. Good Girls is a reveal of the subtext in the strained small talk and resisted eye contact. The final verses of the song act as a reluctant goodbye to the part of ourselves we once had with each other, or before each other, and will never have again."
Growing up in what she describes as a "static and boring" pocket of suburban New Jersey, Gunn's musical sensibility was shaped by her father, a former new wave club DJ, and her sister, who now plays in Leeds noise rock outfit Skintern. Across previous singles 'Dog In A Hot Car', 'Lucky Girl' and 'lovebite', she has developed a sound she describes as "bubblegum grunge", drawing on artists ranging from Debbie Harry, Joan Jett and Fiona Apple to Karen O, Mitski, Deerhunter, The Moldy Peaches and Elastica (please can more people directly cite Elastica, thanks - Ed).
A support slot with Kim Gordon at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire sits among several upcoming appearances for Gunn, who recently completed a support run with TTSSFU. Reflecting on where she stands, she added: "I'm not a newborn baby, but it is my first day of school."
