To celebrate the label's 20th anniversary, Charles Watson, Flamingods and Girl Ray pick their fave Moshi Moshi releases

Beloved indie label Moshi Moshi are celebrating their 20th birthday with the release of ‘Twenty Years Of Moshi Moshi’, a packed compilation of their releases over the last two decades that includes contributions from Florence and the Machine, Hot Chip, Anna Meredith, Girl Ray, Slow Club, Teleman and loads more.

To help mark their milestone year, we’ve hit up three Moshi alumni - Charles Watson, Flamingods and Girl Ray - for their favourite ever Moshi release.

Hot Club De Paris’s ‘Free The Pterodactyl 3’ was put together from two EPs that blew my mind when I heard them. I’d played with Hot Club quite a lot at the point this music came out and I remember feeling physically angry it was so good. I’m looking through the song titles now and I still feel pretty angry that I didn’t think of any of them before they did.

The Drums’ ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ was one of those singles that came out around the same time that all of us in the band had fully moved over from Bahrain to the UK to study at university and it really soundtracked that period perfectly. It’ll always remind me as a close to a chapter before we eventually went on to explore other music genres and it’s pretty cool how things have now come full circle with us releasing on Moshi Moshi ourselves!

Meiylr Jones’ ‘2013’ is one that keeps you on your toenails first time around… and the next time, and the next, until your feet are whittled down to stump. It never gets boring! I’ve been on these toes three years since its release and I’m a complete regular. He got me whipped. Every song is incredible. Pure hits. And it spans all the times. One second you feel like a romantically frustrated Friar talking problems to the wind, an adviser to only himself. Then he’ll drop a reference to Sweet Home Alabama and it got you feeling “where am I?”. 2013 baby. It’s regal and real. “Take off, your clothes,” he says, and quite frankly, I’m tempted!
