King Tut's Wah Wah Hut

King Tut's Wah Wah Hut is a 300-capacity live venue and bar on St Vincent Street in central Glasgow, opened in February 1990 by the gig promoter Stuart Clumpas and run since by DF Concerts. It took its name from a New York club, and was conceived as a place to put new bands on stage seven nights a week. More than three decades on it remains the city's definitive small room, the rung a band is expected to climb before anyone takes them seriously. Its legend was sealed in 1993, when The Verve, Radiohead and Oasis all played within a fortnight; it was here that Creation Records signed Oasis after the band reputedly bullied their way onto the bill. Early shows by Coldplay, Biffy Clyro, Travis, Paolo Nutini and Lewis Capaldi have followed, alongside visits from Blur, Pulp, Beck and The White Stripes. The King Tut's name has also travelled, lending a stage to T in the Park and latterly TRNSMT.

Barrowland

The Barrowland Ballroom, known as the Barras, is a 1,900-capacity venue in the Calton district of Glasgow's East End, built by Maggie McIver in 1934 and rebuilt after a fire in 1960. Above the weekend market halls sits a large ballroom whose sprung dance floor, lively acoustics and animated neon sign have made it one of the most loved rooms in British music. Many artists regard it as the best gig in the country, and its name turns up in songs by the likes of Amy Macdonald and Simple Minds. It became a concert venue in earnest from 1983, when Simple Minds filmed the video for Waterfront there. Stiff Little Fingers have played it every St Patrick's Day since 1992, recording a live album to mark 25 years, and a path in the adjacent Barrowland Park records the names of artists who have appeared. Since 2020 it has hosted the annual Scottish Music Awards.

Saint Luke's is a converted church in Glasgow's East End, a parish church built in the 1830s that the Woods brothers bought in 2013 and restored as a music venue, bar and kitchen. The stained glass and the pipe-organ frame survive, lending gigs an unusual grandeur, and the building has settled comfortably into the city's live ecosystem, marking ten years as a venue in 2025. Capacity reports vary, but the main hall is generally cited at up to around 600. The room has form for the sort of night that becomes a story. Lewis Capaldi played a sold-out headline set here in 2017, before the world had quite caught up with him, and Damon Albarn performed two sets in December 2021. The Libertines, Texas, Beth Orton and Hannah Peel have all played the church too, a spread that says something about its reach across guitar music, pop and the more thoughtful end of the bill. In a city not short of good rooms, it has carved out a distinct one.
