The Barrowland Ballroom, known as the Barras, is a 1,900-capacity venue in the Calton district of Glasgow's East End, built by Maggie McIver in 1934 and rebuilt after a fire in 1960. Above the weekend market halls sits a large ballroom whose sprung dance floor, lively acoustics and animated neon sign have made it one of the most loved rooms in British music. Many artists regard it as the best gig in the country, and its name turns up in songs by the likes of Amy Macdonald and Simple Minds. It became a concert venue in earnest from 1983, when Simple Minds filmed the video for Waterfront there. Stiff Little Fingers have played it every St Patrick's Day since 1992, recording a live album to mark 25 years, and a path in the adjacent Barrowland Park records the names of artists who have appeared. Since 2020 it has hosted the annual Scottish Music Awards.
