Rock City

8 Talbot Street, Nottingham NG1 5GG

Rock City is a 2,000-capacity music venue and nightclub in Nottingham city centre, opened in December 1980 in a building whose previous lives stretched back to a Victorian skating rink. Run by the promoter DHP Family, it spreads across three rooms with a famously sticky main hall, and has spent more than four decades as one of the country's most dependable stops on the alternative live circuit, faithful to rock without ever being hemmed in by it. The Undertones effectively opened it, and the roll-call since takes in Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, David Bowie, the Ramones and Oasis, with Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain among those known to have stayed for a drink at the bar. It hosted the first UK performance of Public Enemy's Bring the Noise, has been named venue of the year repeatedly, and remains a rite of passage for touring bands and Nottingham nightlife alike.

The Bodega Social Club

23 Pelham Street, Nottingham NG1 2ED

The Bodega is a bar, club and live venue in Nottingham, run by the promoter DHP Family and long established as one of the city's favourite spots for new music. Across two decades and more it has been a fixture of the Midlands scene, an intimate room that pairs a busy programme of club nights with a booking policy built on catching acts early. Locals and students alike treat it as a go-to, and it has collected its share of awards. Its real boast is its track record for booking future headliners before they broke. Among the many acts to have played its small stage are Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Mumford and Sons, Two Door Cinema Club and The xx, a list that reads like a who's-who of artists who went on to far bigger rooms.

Rescue Rooms

Masonic Place, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham NG1 5JT

Rough Trade

5 Broad Street, Nottingham NG1 3AJ

Rough Trade Nottingham combines a record shop and a live venue under one roof, set in a three-storey Victorian building in the city's Hockley quarter. The shop sits on the ground floor; upstairs is a bar and a live room holding around 150, which makes for the close, slightly chaotic gigs that only a space this size can deliver. It is part of the wider Rough Trade chain of shops, carrying that name's long association with independent music into the room itself. As a small venue it does the familiar but vital work of in-store sets and intimate headline shows, often tied to record releases, putting bands within arm's reach of the people buying their records. For Nottingham it functions as both a retail fixture and a grassroots stage, the two halves feeding each other.
