About This Track

'Free' opens 6LACK's debut album 'FREE 6LACK' with a studied contrast between liberation and the hollow kind. The Atlanta singer wakes thinking of someone who once held him, now claiming to feel freer than he's ever been. The song turns that claim back on the ex, suggesting the freedom she chased by running the streets is really just another trap, no need to pretend otherwise.

6LACK's delivery stays measured even as the lyric sharpens. He notes the women lining up to take her place, the way she gave it all away, the fact that she doesn't want to touch anybody but him. The repetition of 'freer than I've ever been' works like a mantra he's testing for truth, moving state to state whilst she stays stuck. The track sets the tone for an album released in November 2016 that earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album and RIAA gold certification by February 2018.
