About This Track

Adele and Dan Wilson wrote this fourth track from '21', a downtempo country-styled ballad produced by Rick Rubin. The song arrived late in the album's production after Adele decided to shift away from the unrelenting blame she'd directed at her ex throughout the record. Here, she turns the lens inward, acknowledging her own "fickle heart" and "wandering eye" whilst still asking him to remember what drew him to her in the first place. The plea runs through the song's core: don't you remember the reason you loved me before? She frames her distance as an act of grace, a space she gave him to breathe, hoping it might somehow bring him back. It's a song about the gap between self-awareness and powerlessness, where admitting your own failings doesn't actually fix anything. The repetition of that central question becomes both tender and desperate, a voice caught between acceptance and the need to be recalled.
