About This Track

A gospel-tinged ballad co-written with Greg Wells at his studio in Culver City, Los Angeles, 'One and Only' finds Adele addressing a crush with unguarded directness. The track appears as the ninth song on '21', the album that became the first to reach one million sales on iTunes in Europe and the top US iTunes album of all time. Dan Wilson also contributed to the writing. The lyric builds around a plea for commitment, Adele asking someone to forgive their past and take a chance on her. She acknowledges the difficulty of opening up, repeating the line about giving up your heart over a rising arrangement. The performance balances vulnerability with the bluesy vocal confidence that runs through the album, the tempo uptempo enough to keep the sentiment from tipping into stillness. The song appeared in the second season of the television series 'Unforgettable', in an episode entitled 'Up in the Flames'. It received heavy promotion despite not being released as a single, the streaming figures eventually climbing past 350 million on Spotify alone.
