About This Track

'I'll Be Waiting' marks a tonal shift within 21, trading the album's prevailing anger and desolation for something more hopeful. Co-written and produced by Paul Epworth, the track pivots toward reconciliation, with Adele acknowledging her own failings in a relationship and offering a posture of contrition and willingness to change. The song dwells on separation, on time and distance as obstacles, but frames them as surmountable. What distinguishes it is the emotional register. Where much of 21 dwells in hurt and recrimination, 'I'll Be Waiting' extends an olive branch. Adele sings of seeing her future in someone, of putting her hands up and committing to be different, better. It is less a song about heartbreak than about the possibility of repair, about the patience required to earn back trust after you have broken it.
