About This Track

A song built around the simple, hard-won logic that when life is hard, you have to change. Blind Melon's 'Change' opens in darkness, the narrator convinced the sun won't break through, trapped in misery. But the bridge pivots: stop dreaming and you stop living. Keep looking up. The song doesn't pretend transformation is easy or inevitable; it insists only that it's necessary, that stagnation in suffering is a choice you can refuse. The lyrics move between private despair and public performance, between the person fading away and the onlookers who will judge the fade. There's a defiance in that gap: let them be afraid of change, the song says. You don't have to live their way. The final repetition of the title feels less like resolution than permission, a mantra for the moment when everything feels stuck and the only way forward is to become someone different.

"Change" is a single by Blind Melon, released 20th April 1994. Full lyrics are available below.

Change

Change - Blind Melon
I don't feel the suns comin' out today
It's staying in, it's gonna find another way
As I sit here in this misery
I don't think I'll ever (no Lord) see the sun from here
And oh as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say, and they'll say
"Hey look at him! I'll never live that way."
But that's okay, they're just afraid to change
(bridge)
And when you feel life ain't worth living
You've got to stand up and
Take a look around you look up way to the sky
And when your deepest thoughts are broken
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin' it's time to die
And as we all play parts of tomorrow
some ways we'll work and other ways we'll play
But I know we can't all stay here forever
So I want to write my words on the face of today
And then they'll paint it
(solo)
(solo)
And oh as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say, they'll say
"Hey look at him and where he is these days."
When life is hard, you have to change
